Pricing models
A pricing model is the rule that turns a quantity into an amount. yRecurring has eight of them, and every amount they produce carries a calculation trace. Open any invoice line and click "Show calculation" to see the exact math.
This chapter explains each model with a worked example, every setting you can change, and the edge cases to know about. A pricing model is chosen on a price, and each page shows the config for its model. You create prices through the POST /v1/prices endpoint; see the API reference.
Compare the quantity models
The four quantity-based models price the same number very differently. Move the slider and watch what one quantity costs under each. The amounts are computed by the same calculators that price real invoices.
- Per unit
- $1,000.00
- Tiered
- $900.00
- Volume
- $800.00
- Stairstep
- $1,200.00
The example scenario: per unit charges $10.00 for every unit. Tiered charges $10.00 for units 1 to 50, $8.00 for units 51 to 150, and $6.00 above that, adding the tiers up. Volume uses the same table but reprices the whole quantity at the tier it lands in, which is why its line drops at each boundary. Stairstep ignores the unit count and charges a flat amount per tier: $500, $1,200, or $2,000.
In this chapter
- Flat fee Charge one fixed amount per billing period, no matter the quantity or usage.
- Per unit Charge a fixed price for each unit, seat, or block of usage, with an optional free allowance.
- Tiered Split the quantity into bands and charge each band at its own rate, then add them up.
- Volume Find the band the total quantity lands in, then charge every unit at that band's rate.
- Stairstep Charge one flat price for the whole band the quantity lands in, ignoring the exact count.
- Package Sell units in fixed blocks and charge per block, rounding partial blocks up.
- Percentage Charge a percentage of an amount, for transaction fees and revenue share.
- Dynamic (you set the cost) Bill the exact cost your app computes per event, with an optional markup. Built for AI usage.
