The customer portal
What the portal offers, how customers sign in, and what you can let them do.
The customer portal lets your customers manage their own billing without emailing you. It is off until you turn it on, and you decide exactly what each customer can do.
Turning it on
Go to Settings, then Customer portal, and switch it on. Your customers reach it at your portal address followed by your account slug. Everything on the page uses your business name, logo, and brand color, so it feels like part of your product.
How customers sign in
The portal uses passwordless sign-in. There are no passwords to set or reset. A customer enters their email, and the portal sends them a six digit code and a sign-in link. Either one signs them in. The code and the link last ten minutes and can be used once.
A customer can sign in with the email on their customer record or the email of any of their active contacts. If one email is linked to more than one of your customers, the portal asks them to pick which account they want to manage.
Sessions last seven days and roll forward as the customer keeps using the portal. A customer can sign out at any time from the menu.
What customers can do
Each action is a switch you control in Settings, so the portal only ever offers what you allow:
| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
| Change plan | Move to another eligible plan or change quantity, with a clear preview of what they owe today and what they will pay going forward. |
| Cancel | End the subscription, either at the end of the current term or right away, following a short reason survey and one optional offer to stay. |
| Pause and resume | Take a break and start billing again later. |
| Enter a promo code | Apply a coupon code you have set up to their own subscription. |
| See usage | View how much they have used this period on metered plans. |
Customers can always see their subscriptions, view and pay invoices, and update their billing details and saved cards, no matter which switches are on.
The change-plan preview
When a customer changes plan, the portal shows the full math before they confirm: the credit for the time left on their current plan, the charge for the new one, and the net amount due today. Nothing is hidden, so there are no surprise bills.
You decide which plans a customer can switch to: on each price, turn on Available in customer portal, and only those prices (on the same product, in the same currency and billing period) appear as options. The same live preview covers a quantity change when you allow it.
Cancelling
Cancelling is honest and quick. The customer picks a reason, sees at most one offer to stay (a pause or a discount, if you set one up), and the option to cancel is always right there on the same screen. You choose whether a cancellation takes effect at the end of the paid term or immediately.
The three ways in
You can open the portal in whichever way fits your product.
The hosted page. Send customers to your portal address and let them sign in with their email. Nothing to build.
From your own app. If your customers already log in to your product, you can send them straight into the portal without a second sign-in. Your backend creates a portal session through the API and gets back a one-time link to open. You can also drop them onto a single task, such as paying an invoice or updating a card, and send them back to your app when they are done.
Embedded. You can show the portal as a popup inside your product using a small script, so customers never leave your page. This only works for the web addresses you list under Embedding in Settings, which keeps other sites from framing your portal.
For the hosted and embedded ways, see your developer for the session API details. The building blocks are the same portal either way.
Support
Set a support email under Settings, and it appears in the portal footer and in the contact option during cancellation, so a customer who needs help knows where to go.
